I have been hearing about Jane Austin since high school. In high school, I was too cool to read Jane Austin. In my young adulthood, I was too busy and now, I am still to busy but decided to give it a whirl. I got the book Pride and Prejudice from the local library and started it on Sunday. Now, I know all you Jane Austin fans are waiting for me to say "WOW, I couldn't put this book down" While that is true, it was NOT because I found the book exciting. I continued reading because it was like a mystery novel to me. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen or to find meaning in any part of the book. Did I finish the book? NO, and I am still reading the book, waiting for something exciting to happen. I understand there is a character named Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth, Jane, ect, ect but what these characters are doing is a mystery to me. I understand that Mr. Darcy is very arrogant and in denial about caring for someone of lower class like Elizabeth but I do not understand the rest. I will finish this book and hopefully find the wonder in this novel.

I think it might be easier to start with the movies. BBC makes a great Pride and Prejudice, and I like Sense and Sensibility, not to mention Emma. But here's the thing: it has to be a quiet house, with no boys looking over your shoulder telling you how boring this looks. The wonder of Jane Austin is in her witty, subtle humor, her knowledge of human nature, and the ability to craft beautiful happy endings, when she herself never found that true love.
But the books are SO HARD to get through. You have to have an appreciation for her first before approaching them, which sounds backwards, but with TV, not so much. This is one time when I'd read the book after the movie. My thoughts. BTW, if you haven't seen P&P (the full 6 hour version) by June, we'll have an all-girl sleepover dedicated to Jane.
Hope this helps... Sarah
